CHAPTER EIGHT

Reesa accepted her second cup of coffee from Jamie and smiled up at her friend as Rick spoke into his cell phone to Theo about his car. “Am I looking at a few hours? Or a day? I’ll pay double if you can fit me in this morning.”

Reesa took a sip of her drink and wondered how frustrated that last comment must have made Theo. Theo didn’t seem like a man that could be bought. If someone else’s car was ahead of Rick’s, that’s how it would remain. She wasn’t sure how Rick would handle that news.

“I understand. Thank you, T.J.” Rick hung up. “Good man. Apparently, I have a faulty fuel injector. He recommends I replace them all.”

“And are you?”

“Yes. He said it would take a few hours, but he would have me on the road by this afternoon.” Rick beamed at his obvious triumph. “Which is great. I have to be in Hot Springs by three.”

“I’m glad he was able to help you out. Theo’s great.”

“And are you two dating?” Rick asked.

Reesa flushed. “Oh, no, we aren’t. He’s actually my neighbor.”

“Ah. I sensed familiarity between the two of you,” Rick acknowledged. “But that’s good news for me. I’m in need of a lunch date if I’m to be in this town for a few more hours. Would you mind?”

“Oh, well—” Reesa eyed an interested Jamie leaning her ear towards their conversation. “I would need to check with my daughter.”

“Oh, you have a daughter?” Rick asked curiously.

Reesa nodded as she reached for her cell phone and dialed the cabin’s phone number. Clare answered on the second ring, surprisingly chipper and awake. “Wow.” Reesa smiled. “I wasn’t expecting you to be so alert.”

“Hey, Mom.” Clare muffled around a bite in her mouth. “Hey, is it okay if I venture into town with Teddy? He offered to come pick me up and we were going to grab coffee at Jamie’s with a few other friends.”

“That’s fine. I’m actually here now.”

“Oh, great, because my second question was if I could borrow some cash.” Clare laughed into the phone.

“Of course it was. Just remember, ‘Five dollars each. Five dollars is all my mom allows me to spend.’”

“Mom, I’m not sure that’s an appropriate quote,” Clare laughed.

“What? It’s Full Metal Jacket!” Reesa challenged.

“Um, yeah, but it’s also the quote that comes from negotiating with a prostitute.”

“Is it?” Reesa looked confused and thought a moment. “Oops.”

“Yeah,” Clare laughed. “We’ll be there in a bit. Thanks, Mom.”

Reesa hung up. “She’s actually headed into town with some friends, so I guess I’m good. Though I have to be here to hand over some money. Typical teenager; she doesn’t have any cash on her.”

“How old is she?” Rick asked.

“Fifteen.” Reesa could see the realization hit him, but he was too polite to say anything. She could also tell the news didn’t sit well with him. She was used to the response. He’d be polite a bit longer, but the idea of a woman with a teenage kid seemed to weird men out a lot of times.
